From Democracy to Kleptocracy in 1, 2, 3…
1. Democracy is a long and hard-fought battle. Perhaps, one can argue that we never were truly 100% democratic. Women, Native Americans, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, blacks, have all struggled with the right to vote. One person one vote is a simple and idealistic concept, but it’s unattainable because that means some people will have to give up their power. The 1965 Voting Right Act was supposed to have fixed the problem, why was it made to expire? Since then, it has been eroding away little by little. To today, each state has a lot of power in deciding who can and cannot vote or how people can vote. There’s redistricting, gerrymandering, voter ID laws, ect. My point is, pure Democracy, like pure Communism, is a mere concept and only works as an ideology, not so much in reality. In truth, we’ve done a lot more harm in the name of democracy. Like religion, democracy is an idea that we, Americans, are especially good at using to spread propaganda and to drum up the beats when we pit people against each other while a few benefits. I’m not saying that democracy or religion is bad, not at all. I’m saying that they both are often being used to manipulate the mass. While we are busy fighting among each others, we don’t realize that we are being used and someone is getting away with robbery. Is your head exploding yet? Good.
2. “The tyranny of wealth” is at the core of Plutocracy, although we still maintained somewhat a form of democracy. A Plutocracy is, a form of Oligarchy, a government which is controlled by a small minority of the richest so-called “donor class”. For decades, the wealthy has been wiggling their way to power and slowly chipping away our democracy.
The rich and the elites maintained their cozy relationships together by engaging in ‘donations’, cronyism, and quid pro qos. For example, the DAPL pipeline owner, Kelcy Warren, poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into TX Governor Greg Abbott’s campaign, and now he’s on the board of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission until 2021, to easily further his oil interest. Dick Cheney was the CEO of Halliburton before he was the VP for George W. Bush. After Halliburton was given the contract for Iraq war, it’s profit soared (tripled), and so did Dick Cheney’s stock.
Some may say that they don’t always get what they want, for Kelcy Warren have poured $6 million into Rick Perry’s presidential campaign and that sunk right to the bottom of the swamp. While it is true that political donations is like gambling, they sometimes bet on the wrong card, but when they get it right, it’s worth millions or even billions. If there is nothing that they want in return, why give millions to politicians, they could very well donate it to a non-profit and make some real changes. Oh, did I mention that Rick Perry is on the board of Kelcy Warren’s company, Energy Transfer Partners? And now he is going to lead the Department of Energy, the very department he wanted to abolish. Thanks President-elect Trump!
3. Now, despite how you feel about it, Donald Trump is the President-elect. He ran as the populist, the outsider, the one that will drain the swamp and turn Washington upside-down. In reality, we are looking at the transforming of our society into Kleptocracy, literally “rule by thieve”. According to Wikipedia, Kleptocracy is a government “with corrupt rulers (kleptocrats) that use their power to exploit the people and natural resources of their own territory in order to extend their personal wealth and political power. Typically this system involves the embezzlement of state funds at the expense of the wider population, sometimes without even the pretense of honest service.” Trump has already been paying his own airplane crews and his own hotels from his campaign funds. I really don’t need to say anything more.
If you still can’t see it, look closer. Rex Tillerson is the CEO of Exxon mobile, now appointed to Secretary of State. Exxon is a company that has engaged in pillaging and land grabbing all around the world in the name of oil exploration. Wherever it goes, it leaves a trail of human rights violations, environmental disasters, and exploitation. Iraq, Syria, Somalia, much of our foreign policies are based on oil, now with an oil tycoon sitting in power, we don’t even need to pretend anymore. Betsy DeVos, who does not believe in public schools and a long time advocate for charter schools, is now the Secretary of Education. Rick Perry, who has sued the EPA more than 15 times, is not the Secretary of Energy. Did I mention that Rick Perry is one the board of an oil company? Thanks to the corrupted Washington Elites, we were already being robbed blind while being pitted among each other. Now that there is no middleman anymore, the corrupters of our democracy have gained power and became the ruler, now can you say…Kleptocracy?
I don’t want to end this without giving you a glimpse of hope. Now more than ever, we must ORGANIZE and UNITE, whatever that you are, we all have one goal: to fight for the basic human rights and to live with freedom, dignity and the opportunity to pursuit happiness for everyone (yes, I reworded the constitution, you know what I’m saying). We must PEACEFULLY protest, strike, boycott, and VOTE! This coming midterm election is extremely important. Do your research, and make sure you are a part of it and vote smart!
